The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day, all in accordance with the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:1–4). But to understand the good news, we must first understand the bad news.
All of us have sinned by breaking God’s Law (Romans 3:23; 1 John 3:4). Whether through lying, stealing, hatred, lust, or pride, we have rebelled against our Creator and earned His just judgment (Romans 6:23). Sin separates us from God and brings death.
But God, in His mercy, sent His Son—Jesus the Messiah, truly God and truly man—to live the perfect, sinless life we could never live. He perfectly obeyed every command of God’s Law (Matthew 5:17) and then willingly took upon Himself the punishment we deserve. He was crucified, bearing the wrath of God in our place (Isaiah 53:5–6), and then rose again in victory over sin and death.
Now, God commands all people everywhere to repent—to turn from sin (lawlessness) and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Acts 17:30). We are not saved by obedience to the Law, but by grace through faith in Christ (Ephesians 2:8–9). And yet, God’s Law remains our guide—not to earn salvation, but to walk in holiness and gratitude (Romans 3:31; 1 John 5:3).
This is the Gospel:
Jesus lived, died, and rose again to redeem sinners and restore them to God—so that we might walk in newness of life, in obedience to His commandments, and in the joy of His Kingdom.
